ZOLA BLOOD + MAIIANS en The Lexington (Londres-02/12/14)

Mi primera vez en el Lexington, en cuatro años que llevo viviendo en Londres, y ya solo eso era motivo de celebración para mí. Mítico pub donde los haya, donde tocan grupos que generalmente se están abriendo paso en la difícil escena musical de la capital, así que es un buen sitio tanto para sorpresas como para decepciones.

Había escuchado bastante a Zola Blood en las semanas anteriores al concierto y me habían dejado impresionado. Su EP Meridian (2014) suena más maduro de lo que te esperarías en una banda novata.

Pues bueno, tocaban en casa y se notaba en la afición, había feeling y lo más importante, ponían orgullosos el cartel de SOLD OUT.

“Eyes Open” abrió su set de una forma impecable. Desde un primer momento sonaron casi perfectos, aunque a veces no se sabe muy bien si eso es bueno del todo. Un tema que se caracteriza por un sinte hipnótico en loop de principio a fin y una voz con una reverb inmensa que funciona muy bien con el tono misterioso de la canción.

“Pierces” y “See the Sights”, en la misma línea electro ambiental de las demás, fueron dos temas nuevos que esperemos estén en su próximo EP o álbum.

Una de mis favoritas “Leaves” sonaba más convincente si cabe que las anteriores. Recientemente remezclada por el productor Tythe y con una acogida muy buena entre los fans, apunta a ser uno de los clásicos en los directos de la banda en un futuro.

Personalmente creo que “Meridian”, mi canción preferida de los londinenses, deberían haberla tocado la última, esperaba un poco más de “desmelene” por parte del grupo ya que el tema puede dar para ello. Tiene una fuerza impresionante, un estribillo muy pegadizo, perfecta para bailar. Otra canción que les han remezclado, y en este caso ha sido el prestigioso Dj y productor Applescal.

 

Nos volvían a regalar una nueva canción, “Rouge” y cerraban el concierto con “Grace”, también incluida esta última en su EP. Guitarras que se pierden en el infinito, otra vez sintes repetitivos y pegadizos y una voz muy melódica, características estas inconfundibles ya en Zola Blood.

Creo que les faltó algo de chispa, ese algo que te atrae la primera vez que ves un grupo en directo. Puede que fueran el par de chupitos que le sobró a Matt Berninger de The National la semana pasada en su concierto, pero no perderemos la esperanza en estos chicos que, eso si, suenan como los ángeles.

Como teloneros disfrutamos de Maiians presentando su EP “Tokyo”, grupo instrumental de Oxford que nos dejó una sensación muy buena. Solo tocaron 4 canciones y esperemos ver que pueden hacer en su concierto en enero en Londres. Me quedo con “Lemon”, una canción completísima y bastante larga, con toques de jazz y sonidos tribales. La doble batería le va a dar mucho juego a esta banda.

It was my very first time at The Lexington in four years that I have lived in London and that was a good enough reason for celebration for me. Legendary pub and venue where you can usually see bands that are making head way into the difficult music scene of the capital, so it's a good place for either surprises or disappointments. 

I had heard Zola Blood weeks before the show and they had left me very impressed. Their new EP Meridian 2014 sounds more mature than you would expect in a beginner band.

Well, they were playing at home and you could see it in the crowd, there was a good vibe and most importantly, they proudly put up the “SOLD OUT” sign.

"Eyes Open" opened their set in a flawless manner. From the first moment they sounded almost perfect, although sometimes you do not really know if that's the right thing. This track is characterized by a hypnotic synth loop which plays from start to finish and a voice with a huge and amazing reverb that works very well with the mysterious tone of the song.

"Pierces" and "See the Sights" are two new songs that we hope are in their next EP or album and they are in the same line of electro ambient as the others.

One of my favourite "Leaves" sounded more convincing if possible than the previous ones. It has been recently remixed by the producer Tythe and it has been very well received by fans. It aims to be one of the hits of the band in future concerts.

Personally I think "Meridian", my favourite song of the Londoners, should have been played the last and I expected a little more "craziness" by the group since the style of this song has a lot to give. It is an extremely powerful song, with a very catchy chorus, perfect for dancing. Another song that has been remixed, in this case by the prestigious DJ and producer Applescal.

Another new song was "Rouge" and they closed the concert with "Grace", also included on their EP. Guitars that get lost in the infinite, again very loopy and catchy synths and a very melodic voice, distinctive features in Zola Blood.

I think they lacked some spark, something that really attracts you the first time you see a live band. It may have been the extra couple of shots that Matt Berninger of The National had last week in their gig, but we keep our hope in these guys who really sound fantastic live.

As supporting band we saw Maiians, an intrumental band from Oxford. They were presenting their EP "Tokyo", which left us with a very good feeling. They only played 4 songs and hopefully we will see what else they can do in their next concert in January in London. "Lemon" really caught me, a very complete and quite a long song, with touches of jazz and tribal sounds. The double battery will definitely give this band an extra touch.
